I created this category to share my experiences and tips for surviving the workplace. Suffice it to say, this category is more about getting to FI, then it is about living the FI lifestyle. We all have to start out somewhere, and for many of us, this means working for the man right after college.
This is an area where I feel I can contribute to other FI’ers because of my experience working for large and small consulting companies. I call this category corporate survival because it’s all about getting through and making the most of a corporate career. I’ll provide my tips and lessons learned, as well as insight behind the scenes to help people to think about asking the right questions, getting the right answers, with the right timing.
So where to begin….and where am I coming from? I am 44 years old and getting into year 21 of my career. I started my first real people management (aka front line management) role in 2008. After that I took on more and more people, eventually working my way up the career ladder in to more of a regional management role. I have been fortunate enough to hold different management positions where I have supervised folks at different levels in their careers, all the way up through seasoned professionals with over 30 years of experience, and regional management positions where I managed other managers. I have worked for different companies of various sizes, ranging from a startup firm, a firm with just less than 500 people, and companies with tens of thousands of employees. I have been privy to more trainings, conference calls, difficult conversations, hiring’s and firings, and meetings than I care to remember.
My aim with this category is to not be preachy but share experiences and offer up the opportunity for others to share their experiences as well. This section of the blog offers my insights to what happens with respect to salaries, raises, promotions, bonuses, manager reviews, and overall workplace mindset.
I also realize that my experience is tied to one industry and that other readers out there will share their experiences on various topics in the comments.
